Alberta Ministry of Labour Split into 2 Ministries

Alberta no longer has a standalone Ministry of Labour. Its former responsibilities have been divided between two departments: the Ministry of Jobs, Economy, Trade and Immigration (JEDI) and the Ministry of Skilled Trades and Professions.

The Ministry of Jobs, Economy, Trade and Immigration now oversees the key labour functions that affect daily business operations, including Employment Standards, Occupational Health and Safety (OHS), and labour relations through the Alberta Labour Relations Board.

This ministry is responsible for administering Alberta’s Employment Standards Code and setting minimum rules for employment, such as wages, vacation pay, terminations, and job-protected leaves.

Alberta OHS Act, Code, Regulation & Your Compliance Duties

In Alberta, workplace safety falls under three main documents: the OHS Act, OHS Regulation, and OHS Code. Together, they define an employer’s legal responsibilities to keep workers healthy and safe.

Every business must take “all reasonable steps” to prevent injury, train employees, control hazards, and maintain proper documentation. Employers must also ensure workers understand safe work procedures, conduct hazard assessments, investigate incidents, and report serious injuries and dangerous occurrences.

Compliance isn’t optional. Officers can conduct inspections, issue orders, or levy fines if a business fails to meet its safety obligations.
